A Historical Legacy

The Legacy Hotel & Suites had its beginnings as the Hotel Frederica, built at Capitol Avenue and Gaines Street in Little Rock in 1913. Three years earlier, Little Rock businessman Fred W. Allsopp had conceived the idea to construct the finest hotel in Arkansas and chose the site which was then just on the "outskirts" of the downtown business district.

The five story framework for the building was erected in 18 working days, which a local newspaper touted as "a record-breaker for this section of the country."

Room rates at the original Hotel Frederica were $2.00 per day for a corner room. Monthly rates were $20.00. Meals were 50 cents.

In 1935, Sam and Henrietta Peck moved from Northwest Arkansas to Little Rock and purchased the hotel. They begain to make changes in the physical structure, including the addition of indoor bathrooms and three penthouse suites. The hotel was eventually renamed the "Sam Peck."

Three years later Fayetteville native Edward Durrell Stone, one of America's premier architects, designed an annex adjoining the south end of the hotel. Stone created an art-deco, international-style building, generally recognized by architects as one of the classic examples of that era of design in Central Arkansas.

Then, in 1960, the third and final section of the Sam Peck was built. This 49-room addition was designed in the fashion of motor inns of the 1960's.

The original five-story portion of the hotel received a modernization and facelift in 1984 when the contemporary facade of brick was removed to show the original exterior and proudly re-opened as the LEGACY HOTEL.
