The Eureka Springs Jazz Society will present An Evening with The DAVID GRISMAN QUINTET, Saturday, September 18th, at 8:00 p.m. The groups special brand of "Dawg Music" incorporates swing, bluegrass, Latin, jazz and gypsy styles. The musicianship of the quintet is such that they move through all these worlds fluently, with grace and humor. Jim Kerwin on string bass, Matt Eakle on flute, Joe Craven on violin and very assorted percussion, Enrique Coria on nylon and steel string guitar, and David Grisman on mandolin are individually and collectively capable of creating all the colors necessary to a group that sounds like they came from many countries and many times. On top of a brilliant collection of ensemble arrangements. Once dubbed "The Paganini of the Mandolin" by the New York Times, Grisman has been praised for his mastery of the instrument, as well as his talents as a composer, bandleader, teacher and record producer, founding his own record label Acoustic Disc. He and his old friend, the late Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead, frequently shared their love of traditional folk, bluegrass, jazz and popular music. Together, they collaborated on four Acoustic Disc releases ‹ the Grammy-nominated "Garcia/Grisman"; "Not For Kids Only," an American Library Association recording; Shady Grove," a collection of unreleased material focusing on traditional ballads and songs; and the jazz compilation "So What." For the past two decades, Grisman has won numerous polls and awards and has headlined at festivals around the world. His bands in their various quartet and quintet configurations have showcased acoustic music since 1975. Check out www.acousticdisc.com Reserved seats are $50 and tickets are available at the Eureka Springs Auditorium Ticket Office 36 S. Main, and by calling 888-855-7823 or 479-253-7788. The Festival officially begins Friday September 17th, at 8:00 p.m. when "B & THE BUZZ" take the auditorium stage to open for "LOS JAZZ VATOS". As a child "B" began playing guitar and singing at the age of 10 and began a life long love of music. He was influenced by the blues, soul, and jazz artists of the 60's and 70's. During his teens he discovered classical music and traveled to Europe where he studied and sang as an operatic tenor. "B" then returned to the states and his first love, blues. He soon found his vocal training lent itself to the standard jazz ballads and began adding these to his repertoire. The grand showmanship he developed on the stages of NY and Europe helped add the unique spark to his musical phrasing and song writing that have become his trademark. With his new band, "B" and the Buzz , he has combined all these ideas into a blend of jazz, blues, bossa nova, and jump swing reminiscent of times gone. LOS JAZZ VATOS' leader and Texas drummer Ernie Durawa is a well-known fixture on the Lone Star music scene. Versatile and eclectic, Durawa has recorded and toured with such diverse acts as Delbert McClinton, the Sir Douglas Quintet, Flaco Jimenez, the Texas Tornadoes, Clark Terry and Eugene Chadbourne. After honing his chops with R&B, Tex-Mex, roots rock, jazz and the avant-garde, Durawa turns his attention to Latin jazz with Los Jazz Vatos. "Influenced by such musicians as Paquito D'Rivera and Horace Silver, Los Jazz Vatos delivers an upbeat set of Latin jazz highlighted by Durawa's excellent percussion work and some fine charts by trombonist Freddie Mendoza." -Gene Hyde, Arkansas Democrat Gazette.
