It was a part of my life from the cradle on. My dad played the piano and loved Big Band jazz and Dixieland. As a result, I grew up listening to everything from Glenn Miller to the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. My mother took voice lessons when I was a kid and used to practice opera solos around the house. And of course, like most good Southern children, I learned to sing at church. That's where I first learned to sing in harmony, too. When I was about 9 or 10, I made a "snare" drum out of a Christmas cookie tin, some handkerchiefs, and a handful of marbles. I carved drumsticks out of the dowels from a couple of wooden suit hangers. I still have the drumsticks--even though I ended up much more a guitarist than a drummer. I got my first guitar when I was 12 and have been playing ever since. I also like to bang around on the piano from time to time. My musical tastes get bigger and broader every year, and for the life of me, I still can't understand how anybody can listen to a great, rocking piece of music--whether classical, jazz, or punk--and not at least tap a foot. For all of these reasons and more, I'm really glad to have had a chance to work on the Arkansas Jazz Heritage Foundation website. It's been a fun way to combine the writing and design skills I use in my "paying gig" everyday with my love of music, and particularly jazz. I hope you enjoy the site. Keep jamming. More later, H. K.
