Burgher "Buddy" Jones, 1924 - 2000
Bassist born on February 17, 1924 in Hope, Arkansas. Jones most recently worked as a musician and resided in Carmel, California. In addition to a remarkable career, he was the classmate and friend of the late Virginia Kelly, mother of the sitting president of the United States and introduced Charles "Yardbird" Parker to his wife, Chan. At seventeen, his mother sent him to study at the University of Kansas City where he met Bird.
After serving in the Navy during World War II as a musician Buddy was hired by Charlie Ventura and then because of his friendship with Parker worked with musicians such as Elliot Lawrence, Al Cohn, Zoot Sims and later became a staff musician with CBS which opened doors for tours with Frank Sinatra, Harry James, and Tommy Dorsey. He considers as a highlight working with Lenny Niehaus and Clint Eastwood as a consultant for the motion picture Bird. Buddy qualifies as a walking jazz history book. A discography of just his work with Al Porcino is eight single-spaced pages of sessions. In addition to the essential "Phil and Quill" album his bandmates include his room-mate Bird himself, Al Cohn, Red Rodney, Jimmy Knepper, Porky Cohen, Don Lamphere, Zoot Sims, Gene Roland, Elliot Lawrence, Tiny Kahn, Joe Newman, Billy Byers, Osie Johnson, Manny Albam, Johnny Carisi, Thad Jones. And Quincy Jones, Gerry Mulligan, Urbie Green, Bernie Glow, Conte Candoli, Ernie Royal, Hank Jones, Ernie Wilkins, amd many others.
Buddy tended to understate. "Yeah," he smiles, "we had a lot of fun."
