Detroit-based jazz legend Wendell Harrison will perform on saxophone and clarinet at Monday Jazz at The AfterThought. He will perform two days while in Little Rock: a special Sunday show at 6 pm, November 30, and the regular Monday Jazz show on December 1, 1997 at 8 pm. His show is truly not to be missed.
Harrison has performed with many outstanding jazz stars, such as Roy Brooks, Freddie Hubbard, and Eddie Harris. His fame has spread through the United States and Europe. He has compiled an instruction book, the BeBoppers Method Book with accompanying cassette tape, which is an essential aid for young musicians.
Harrison grew up and attended school in Detroit. He met and played music with a number of other musicians while at Northwestern High School: trumpeter Lonnie Hillyard, saxophonist Charles McPhearson, and percussionist Roy Brooks. He also attended the Detroit Conservatory of Music. He then moved to New York when he was 18 years old, where he was a successful jazz performer, sharing the stage with many famed artists, such as Lou Rawls, Joe Henderson, Sun Ra, Hank Crawford, Betty Carter, Sarah Vaughn, and Ella Fitzgerald.
As a leader Harrison has eighteen releases to his credit on American record labels Tribe, Rebirth and WenHa, and foreign labels Soul Jazz (London, England) and P Vine/Blues Interactions (Japan).
These shows are sponsored by the Arkansas Jazz Heritage Foundation, The AfterThought, and The Legacy Hotel. Both shows are $10 admission, with tickets available in advance at the AfterThought (on Kavanaugh Blvd. in Little Rock) and at Capitol Keyboard (501-228-9999).
